Sometimes people say Lansing is a sleepy community. I object to that notion. You may be asleep, so you don't see what is really happening. Lansing, Michigan is awake. Breathing, kicking and making moves.

Maybe you need someone from outside to tell you? You think I am just a cheerleader for small business?

When the television show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" shows up, all of the sudden you get excited. Yes, Guy Fieri brought the crew to Meat BBQ and Cosmos in Old Town. There is a rumor (I have pictures to verify) that he was at Capital City BBQ and possibly one more local eatery.

It shouldn't require an outside celebrity to give you proof that something is good or great. Explore your town and support businesses that aren't chains. Support those that invest directly into the community with their time and elbow grease. Visit the holes in the wall and the greasy spoons. You might be surprised by what you find.

I am thankful for shows like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives because it showcases local businesses and the people who put their blood, sweat and tears into their passion. We should all appreciate those who are masters of their craft.
