Old Town’s Dickens Village a Holiday Event that Celebrates the Season

"It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good-humour."

- Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Inspired by the Victorian Era novella by Charles Dickens – A Christmas Carol, Lansing’s Old Town merchant association kicked off the holiday season Saturday, December 1st with the annual Dickens Village event.  Family fun activities were front and center with rides in a horse drawn carriage, ornament-making and a holiday scavenger hunt.  To enhance the flavor of the day Dickens characters and Carolers roamed the streets of Old Town to entertain all who attended this festive event.

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we look forward to this annual family friendly event every year.  So if you missed being haunted by the ghosts of Christmas past, you can still put a visit to Old Town on your family calendar of events because the Christmas spirit is alive In Old Town.  If you come, please be sure to stop in to the Cravings store to sample the latest and most popular flavors and consider gifts from Cravings to help you complete your holiday shopping list.  Holiday Tins, Cravings Gift Cards, and the popular Whirly Pop Popper and Seed are all great choices.

Ideas for Pumpkin Carving…WWMD? Planning to carve a pumpkin for Halloween? If you would like more than the triangles for eyes/nose and rectangles for the gap-toothed jack-o-lantern smile, it might just be time to ask yourself…WWMD.  Indeed, what would Martha Stewart do?  Fear not, the maven of all holiday gatherings has assembled nearly 50 great ideas, plus pumpkin carving patterns in downloadable templates, to sharpen your pumpkin carving.  Even if you are not a Martha fan, there are some great resources here.

Go ahead and design your own jack-o-lantern but be sure to use the latest is safe carving tools. The carving kits that are available at nearly every store that has a Halloween display can make your carving experience a lot easier and much safer.

Take a cue from Martha and draw out your design on paper so you can take advantage of the existing assets presented by your pumpkin and safely transfer your design by poking the cut lines through the paper right onto your pumpkin.

Pumpkin carving can be both fun and frustrating. If you have younger children that want to be part of the process, yet are not ready for the challenges and safety risks, be sure to create an age appropriate opportunity to involve your children.  Who else would relish the idea of scooping out the pumpkin guts? If you have a very complex carving in mind you might do well to tackle the job in phases or involve the children in the early stages and then keep the completed carving as a “surprise reveal” after they return from a task (like raking leaves) or an outing to purchase a costume.

Happy Halloween from Cravings Gourmet Popcorn, share the product of your carving with a picture. We’d love to see your handiwork.
