Popcorn Flavors That Make You Say Yum

We are happy to announce our ten new flavors. These flavors will be available February 21st. As suggested by one our genius Facebook fans, three flavors were voted on via poll. Those three flavors are Premium Signature Gold, Bacon Cheddar and Buffalo Cheddar.

The next three flavors were selected by the Cravings team. Those flavors are Cajun Spice, Nacho and finally Sun Dried Tomato & Basil.

Chad had final say over the last four choices. He selected Jalapeno Cheddar, Chicken & Waffles, Coconut Cream and Coco Invasion (our crunchy, caramel like cocoa popcorn).

Finally, don't forget we always have our classic flavors Original Caramel, Dark Molasses Caramel with Sea Salt, Cheddar Cheese, White Cheddar and Lightly Salted Movie Popcorn every day.

Your ideas inspire us to make awesome popcorn. Please share with your friends.

Squeeze the Most out of Summer - End of Summer Celebration

This month at Cravings we are talking parties, all sorts of ideas for interesting parties.  As the summer winds down and before we turn our thoughts to fall and back to school, this party is right for kids of all ages. It is time to get goofy with some sponges and buckets of water.

This party involves lots of buckets, water and big sponges, large rolls of plastic, a garden hose, and stacks of dry towels. There are no rules, no age limits and no end to the fun for these water games…especially if it is a hot and sticky “dog-day of summer.”

What would you do with buckets and water?   How about a modern bucket brigade that delivers plenty of water to a parched garden of an unsuspecting, yet forgiving, neighbor?  How about a little bucket race to see who can fill up a bigger container first…no running, just speed-walking!

What’s the plan for sponges?  How about a sponge toss like an old fashioned egg toss? This could be great for the beginning of the party when people are still in dry clothes.  Contestants pair up and form two lines with partners facing each other.  Make sure there are buckets of water strategically located and begin the tossing of water-filled sponges back and forth. If you fail to catch the sponge, your team is out. Take a big step backward with each toss making it harder and harder to toss and catch.  Winners are the farthest apart and the driest.

What to Do with the Plastic Roll?

Combine the roll of plastic, the hose and maybe a nice gentle sloping yard – you guessed it; you just made your own water slide!

These ideas are just a drop in the bucket, we are sure you can think of even more fun ideas…like maybe a game of Twister with  a sprinkler in the mix.  Just remember to be safe while you are having all this water soaked fun.  Word to the wise, if you are planning to have Craving’s Popcorn snacks for this party (and we hope you do)…wait until the water is off and the towels have been used before you breakout the popcorn because nobody likes soggy popcorn!

Kid’s Cardboard Birthday Party

This month at Cravings we are talking parties, all sorts of ideas for interesting parties. If you have a kid’s birthday party coming up here is a wickedly creative approach to a kid’s party.

There is a You Tube video that has been floating around the internet for over a year that was part of the inspiration for this party idea.  It is Caine’s Arcade a video about a boy that created a whole arcade of games out of loads cardboard, cast-off toys for prizes, and one fierce imagination.

Homemade Miniature Golf Course Party

To make your Cardboard Birthday Party with a Mini-Golf theme make sure that you have plenty of boxes, cardboard packing materials, packing tape, duct tape, scissors, and markers.  If you have lots of kids at the party you can pair them up to make miniature golf obstacles.  Set a reasonable time limit for the construction and testing – make sure those creative minds and tummies are fed with yummy popcorn snacks from Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.   If you are planning a mini-golf event be sure the kids bring a putter and golf ball (which can also be decorated).

For prizes make a trip to the Dollar Store with your Birthday Girl or Boy and let them choose all the prizes.

Throw in some cake and ice cream and you have a Kid’s Cardboard Birthday Party.  (Other riffs on the cardboard construction activity could be Cardboard Robots or Cardboard Town with prizes for the best or most creative construction).

We hope you have fun with this one. There is nothing more engrossing and satisfying for kids than to have the time and materials to explore their creativity.  Let us know how it goes and send us some pictures.

Euchre Party with a Twist

This month at Cravings we are talking parties, all sorts of ideas for interesting parties. If you are a card player this idea is for you even if you don’t yet know how to play Euchre.

Euchre is an easy going, easy to learn card game for four people in teams of two.  While it is easy to pick-up there are nuances to strategy for the game that make it fun and competitive.   We are suggesting a tournament of 4 to 5 tables.  In a traditional tournament the winning pairs continue to advance in brackets to the end of the evening and a big pay-off.   However, instead of continuing to reward the winning pair to advance, find a way to throw an unexpected twist into the night by planning some surprise split-ups where the winning pair is split and are matched up with one of the losing players.

Even though there is strategy to winning at Euchre, a less than seasoned player can be dealt interesting winning hands or unmindfully play a gutsy move.   The evening is sure to be a fun mixer so encourage non-Euchre plays or novices to come along for the fun, food and prizes.  To make it easier you can share this link on the basics of playing euchre.

You can make your own chart or order a Tournament Euchre score chart online at www.tournamenteuchre.com. You will need several things to set up a euchre tournament: Euchre playing cards (one deck per table), large piece of paper or you can order a tournament Euchre Chart at the above website, the number of players should be divisible by 4 since each table has 4 players. You can have each guest bring an appetizer or dessert to share and their own beverage. Check out Cravings Gourmet Popcorn for unique popcorn flavors and classic or obscure sodas.

You can spice it up at your Euchre Party with a Twist by adding money for the winner’s pot or just play for fun bragging rights or crazy white elephant prizes.

Looking for a reason to party, try a Euchre Tournament Party. Looking for great party snacks; look no further than Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.

JazzFest Meet-Up Party Idea

This month at Cravings we are talking parties, all sorts of ideas for interesting parties.  This one is a party in a great big jazzy party.

Every great party needs some music, and jazz is always a popular choice to set the right party mood.  At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we have a ring side seat to a real jazzy party – Old Town’s JazzFest 2013 is put on by MICA, the Michigan Institute for Contemporary Art, and a project of long time community supporter Terry Terry.  JazzFest comes to Old Town on Friday August 2nd and Saturday August 3rd.

An exciting lineup of performers for the 2013 outdoor music festival has been planned, including the Rodney Whitaker Quartet, Terell Stafford and Mardra Thomas. The three have decades of performing experience between them, and will play at mid-Michigan’s premier free outdoor jazz event of the summer.

JazzFest 2013 is the 19th annual event which hosts over 10,000 visitors to experience music, food, and some of the coolest shops in the Greater Lansing area.  And, one of the best parts of JazzFest is the people you see and meet while you are here.

Why not plan a JazzFest meet-up party on the fly?  Coordinate with your friends and choose a location for your meet-up…say Cravings Gourmet Popcorn on Turner?  It’s the perfect spot to start your party; you can’t miss us, just look for the giant popcorn box!

Go to the Movies at the Turner Street Old Town Theatre

In this July series of blog posts Cravings Gourmet Popcorn acknowledges events, people and businesses that positively contribute to the unique identity and experience of Old Town.

We remember going to the drive-in movie theatre as a fun family summer time treat.  The kids would all pile into the family station wagon with blankets and jammies and a big bag of fresh popped popcorn for snacks. The speaker was taken off the post and hung on the car window and we were in for a night of fun!

In Old Town we are in our third year showing outdoor movies as a nod to those family fun times gone by. You will be sitting-in instead of a driving-in to our outdoor theatre set-up. Our huge screen and audio system is put against the wall of the old Chrome Cat building at the base on Turner Street and Grand River, special thanks to sponsors like Such Video.

This year the movie selections are:  Rear Window (Albert Hitchcock Thriller) Ghostbusters, and the comedy Three Amigos (Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short). Commemorative posters have been created for you to purchase, another way to support the efforts of the Old Town Commercial Association.

The family friendly/family safe movies start after dark so be sure to bring your own chair/blanket, beverages, snacks. Beginning on July 19th on Friday nights the family movie line up is as follows:

July 19, 2013, 10:00 pm - 11:30 pm            Three Amigos

July 26, 2013, 10:00 pm - 11:30 pm            Rear Window

August 9, 2013 10:00 pm – 11:30 pm        Ghostbusters

Cravings will be open late so be sure to stop in before the movie starts to get your popcorn and soda.

Old Town Farmer’s Market – A Sweet and Savory Experience

In this July series of blog posts Cravings Gourmet Popcorn acknowledges events, people and businesses that positively contribute to the unique identity and experience of Old Town.

In the summer and fall Old Town First Sundays include the Old Town Farmer’s Market.  Eight to ten vendors travel from local farms to set-up shop in the parking lot next to Sir Pizza on Grand River Avenue in Old Town. They are bringing fresh produce, plants, herbs, homemade baked goods, salsa, cheese, homespun yarn and handcrafted soaps.

Urban settings like Old Town are often classified as food deserts with very few options for fresh produce and other food stuffs.  The Old Town Farmer’s Market becomes a regular food oasis on the following May thru October dates in 2013:  May 5, June 2, July 7, August 4, September 8 (Yes, we know that this is technically not the first Sunday of September), and October 6

The Old Town Farmer’s Market not only feeds body and soul but also feeds a sense of spirit and enthusiasm for the area.  Our Farmer’s Market vendors are great advocates for Old Town.

When you come to Old Town on First Sunday, be sure to stop in to see us at Craving’s Gourmet Popcorn, we are always cooking up new flavorful recipes for our popcorn and we have an enormous variety of classic soda pops to quench your thirst.  Step-up to our FREE sampling station and experience our favorites and some of our newer inventions.

Walkabout Art – Old Town’s First Sunday Gallery Walk

In this July series of blog posts Cravings Gourmet Popcorn acknowledges events, people and businesses that positively contribute to the unique identity and experience of Old Town.

For the Old Town area, the community-wide First Sunday Gallery Walk is a real boost for the eight art galleries located in Old Town. Great Lakes Art, MICA, Linda Beeman Studio, Katalyst, By the Riverside, Creole Gallery, Absolute Gallery, and Gallery 1212 all sweep off the welcome mat and welcome art lovers and browsers alike into their creative spaces.

Most of the galleries provide great art gallery space for local artists and to pay the bills and enhance the visitor experience, offer other art-related services like the classes presented by (name) at Gallery 1212 or the framing service available from Absolute Gallery. Additionally, some of the other Old Town businesses, like Full Circle Financial, contribute to the arts scene by throwing their doors open on First Sunday because they are including contemporary art in their workspaces in conjunction with the local galleries.

In Old Town, the First Sunday of every month provides an open invitation to new visitors to come experience Old Town.  There is always music to enjoy and food to savor in-season with the Old Farmer’s Market held on the same day.  Research says that most new visitors will come for the first time during the First Sunday Gallery Walk.  This first experience of Old Town sets a positively artistic tone for the area.

Because of the popularity of the First Sunday Gallery Walk other businesses in Old Town that are not normally open for business on Sunday make it a point to be open for First Sunday, including Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.

An Instant in Time – Summer Solstice in Old Town

Here is a little solstice education, brought to you by Cravings Gourmet Popcorn:

The summer solstice occurs when the tilt of the earth’s semi-axis, in either the northern or the southern hemisphere, is most inclined toward the sun that it orbits. This happens twice each year, at which times the sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the North or South Pole.

Technically the summer solstice is calculated as an instant in time, solstice is derived from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). Generally described the summer solstice, (commonly known as the first day of summer) occurs on the day that has the longest period of daylight – except in the polar regions, where daylight is continuous, from a few days to six months around the summer solstice. For those of us in the northern hemisphere summer solstice is usually some time between June 20 and June 22.

Celebrations of the Solstice have their roots in ancient tribal rituals, many coming from the European countries. Those celebrations have made their way across the ocean and through time, having little to do with the original celebrations rooted in rituals of fertility.

One of the most notable contemporary Solstice celebrations happens each year in Seattle, Washington where the annual Solstice Parade has been co-opted by Naked Painted Cyclists since 1995.  A little tamer, and closer to home, Old Town Lansing, through the efforts of the Old Town Commercial Association, has been celebrating the dual festivals of the Moon and Sun since (year).  These two festivals create a good reason to sample beer, wine, some great music and the company of good friends.

At Cravings we love events like the Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun because each year new people find their way to Old Town and discover just how fun it is to be here.  We always earn some new regular customers during the festival season, and for that we are so grateful!  So, when you get here face north on Turner Street, look for the giant popcorn box and come on in. We love that instant in time when you change from a stranger to a friend and customer.

Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun Run On Volunteer Power

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we know that every festival or community event usually needs oodles of FREE labor in order to reach its goals to make the most profits possible. Running two festival events back to back requires even more vigilance in coordinating the volunteers.  We were thrilled to see that Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun are using the web-based volunteer coordination program called Volunteer Spot.

Volunteer Spot does a great job of communicating effectively and directly to legions of volunteers; the best part is that it takes the burden of follow-up and reminders off the shoulders of the volunteer coordinator.  Aside from the ease of signing up for volunteer duties online, volunteers receive an email at the end of the year with a recap of all of their volunteer activities coordinated through the program.  Volunteer Spot is a reasonably priced service which earns its keep by continuing to add value by offering ideas for new fund-raising opportunities.

Successful nonprofit organizations know that the difference between success and failure lies in the hands of the volunteer corps.  Don’t let confusion, lack of communication or volunteer burn-out undermine your efforts.

Volunteers or would-be volunteers don’t overlook the personal value of volunteering, getting outside of yourself and helping an organization like the Old Town Commercial Association make a success of the Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun plus a dozen other great events throughout the year.  Your payment will come in the form of new friends, loads of smiles, new experiences, and if you are lucky maybe a FREE T-Shirt or two. Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun both happen in the heart of Old Town Lansing and are scheduled for June 21st and June 22nd respectively, there is still time to sign-up to volunteer.

When you are here in Old Town be sure to stop in and see us at Cravings on Turner Street, just look for the giant popcorn box.

Cravings Welcomes You to the Old Town Scrapfest

One of our favorite events of the summer season is the Old Town Scrapfest. This is an event that you will not find anywhere else and one you won’t want to miss.

The Old Town Scrapfest is in its fifth year and this scrappy little event is taking on a life of its own.  Local artist and perennial Scrapfest committee member, Barb Hranilovich, credits the idea to David Such of Such Video. (Take a look at the videos from past Scrapfest events shot by Such.)

“This is event is so ‘Old Town’ – take what you have and make it better,” said Hranilovich.  “And with the Friedland Industries scrap yard occupying a significant amount of Old Town real estate it is no surprise that this unique event which celebrates the resourcefulness of taking something that has been cast-off and turning it into something beautiful, was born here. “

The event begins with The Pick (which occurred on June first) where registered teams have just one hour to enter the Friedland scrap yard to pick and haul out 500 lbs. of scrap.  Friedland, the main sponsor of the event, assists the teams with the equipment to move their raw scrap.  From that point the teams have two weeks for The Creation when the teams feverishly work to complete their scrap art sculptures in secret locations all over the city.

This year a week has been added for The Preview, when completed scrap art piece entries will be chauffeured around town for the community to have a first look.  The Old Town Scrapfest ends with The Voting which happens in Old Town at the Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun.  “What I love about The Voting is that it is accessible for families, there are no velvet ropes keeping you from touching the art. This is where you will hear families talking about art in ways you won’t hear anywhere else,’ commented the artist.

This crazy, gritty creativity means each year Old Town is commissioning works of art (last year 18 of them) that end up in people’s yards or places of business.  The sculptures are sold and the proceeds go to the Old Town Commercial Association.  It may be too late this year, but there is a way you can get involved besides voting or buying.  There are team sponsorship opportunities and other ways that you can volunteer.  For Team Sponsor information contact Louise Gradwohl   louise@oldtownmainstreet.org

If sponsoring a team is not in your budget - you can still support the Old Town Scrapfest by purchasing a mini scrap souvenirs created by Barb Hranilovich from Friedland scrap.

Lady Bowlers Invade Lansing

Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is ready for the invasion … of lady bowlers. We've popped the best kernels into the tastiest popcorn, are ready with our best recipes for flavoring popcorn, and have plenty of our all-time favorite flavors like caramel with sea salt on hand and all packaged up to go.

The folks at the Convention and Visitors Bureau must be giddy with delight.  The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Midwest Women’s Bowling Tournament is a six week tournament that hosts competition bowling every weekend starting May 19 and ending June 29.  These lady bowlers come to compete for prizes but also bring revenue to area hotels, restaurants and shopping areas.  This is a big economic shot in the arm that happens once every six years. The next time we see the lady bowlers it will be 2019.

So, Lansing, let’s roll out our welcome mat for these visitors that will no doubt be looking for fun and interesting things to do when they are not bowling.  The tournament is being held at the Royal Scot Bowling alley, which means there is a great opportunity for Old Town businesses to host these visitors.

Don’t worry regular Cravings visitors, there is plenty of room in the store and if it gets busy we promise that the team will work extra hard to get you in and out in a hurry.

Chalk of the Town 2013

As odd as it seems Cravings Gourmet Popcorn was happy to see people sitting, crouching and even laying down on the streets and sidewalks of Old Town Saturday June 1st.

Chalk it up to creativity on display.  This event, Chalk of the Town, is rapidly becoming an Old Town favorite.  Artists creating art for art’s sake with little regard for the possibility that rain will wash away the product of their labor.  This year the weather gods shined for the artists decorating the sidewalks and there were some spectacular pieces of work.

If you do any surfing on the internet you may have seen the incredible chalk artists that are able to transform the two-dimensional street canvas into an awesome, eye-tricking and mind-bending three dimensional display.

Time probably doesn’t allow for the incredible 3-d variety of chalk art but our local street chalk artists did us proud. Check out our gallery (coming soon) of the “Best of Chalk of the Town 2013.

When you stop in to Cravings, let us know which one was your favorite chalk art display from Chalk of the Town 2013.

Are We There Yet?

“There was nothing like a Saturday - unless it was the Saturday leading up to the last week of school and into summer vacation. That of course was all the Saturdays of your life rolled into one big shiny ball.” ― Nora Roberts, Rising Tides

Memorial Day is around the corner and vacation season is here. Before you take on a vacation that requires hours in the car and an endless litany of “…are we there yet?” – take a beat and Be a Tourist in Your Own Town.  Spearheaded by the Convention and Visitors Bureau, on June 1st over 60 attractions open their doors to you with your special one-day passport. There is so much to see and do in mid-Michigan, you are going to have a great mini “staycation.”  From 10am to 5pm take a whirlwind tour of attractions using the dedicated CATA buses.  New this year is a check-in contest to win prizes by using your GPS enabled phone to go on a scavenger hunt for points.

Be a Tourist in Your Own Town is a fun-packed day of sampling some of the area’s best attractions. Pack for the day by carrying along a backpack or satchel with all the necessary items to keep your family comfortable and able to keep moving.  Be sure to include drinks and snacks, and what could be better for snacking than a traveler bag of Cravings Gourmet Popcorn? Stop in before the 1st and stock up, or cruise in while you are touring Old Town. You’ll be glad you did, and so will we.

If you choose to Be A Tourist In Your Own Town, you’ll be able to answer the question “Are we there yet?” with the answer: “Yes we are!”

This is the time of year when most students are anxious to see the end of the school year.  It is harder and harder to concentrate on lessons when the great outdoors is promising long days of fun and new adventures.  The pace accelerates for the teachers and there is a frantic air as the list of things to accomplish before the end of the school year seems to get longer rather than shorter.

This week at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we celebrate National Teacher’s Day, and ways to say thank you. It is a good time to reflect on those teachers that gave you the powerful tools that have put you on your own path to success. Maybe this is a good week to acknowledge the teachers of your children (and maybe even your teachers) for their tireless efforts at providing not only education, but encouragement and empowerment.

I asked a friend of mine, a former teacher of second graders, to reflect on what those last days before the end of the school year were like for her.  “The end of the school year was always bittersweet. Although we teachers were also ready for the summer break, it was a bit sad that we would be saying goodbye the children that we had invested not only our time but our emotional energy for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week for 9 months,” said Suzy Winkel. “We have to say goodbye, and the best way is to remember what the students have accomplished and how they have grown. Truthfully, this is a big hand-off and I’m not going to lie, we worry about what is in store for these students over the summer and into the next school year. The only consolation is that we will have some time to rejuvenate and be ready for a new batch of students in September.”

Suzy went on to reminisce about the one day at the end of the school year that created a sense of finality for students and teachers. “We called it rag and bag day. Each child was to bring a bag to carry all their personal belongings home and a rag to clean their desk. We cleaned the desks with shaving cream, which works surprisingly well and makes for a lot of fun for the kids.”

Might we suggest that a great gift to acknowledge a teacher would be a tall bag of Craving’s finest popcorn?  Tie a ribbon around it and attach a card with your expressions of gratitude for a school year well done!

Small But Mighty, Ukuleles Strike the Right Note in Old Town

The ukulele fits the small but mighty description to a “T” – and perhaps that is why Mighty Uke Day is back by popular demand for the third year in a row.  It all happens in historic Old Town and includes a  festival atmosphere which brings together film, live shows, workshops, open microphone time, children’s activities, broadcast, strum-a-longs, jams, all in a celebration of the “people’s instrument.”  Organizer and ukulele aficionado, Ben Hassenger, commented on how he got interested in the ukulele-  “ In 2009 I took a trip to Hawaii and fell in love with the ukulele. When I got back I checked in with Stan Werbin from Elderly Instruments and we ended up forming the group LAUGH  (Lansing Area Ukulele Group) which meets every second Saturday at the Sir Pizza in Old Town.”

In 2011they pulled together the first Mighty Uke Day in just six weeks; it grew in 2012, and this year they’ve really kicked it up a notch with the help of sponsors like Elderly Instruments and the new Old Town General Store.  “We kind of a kick-off the festival season in Old Town, we like to think we have the corner on quirkiness.”

Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is proud to welcome this Old Town event which is scheduled for May 10 and 11, check out their website for a complete line-up of activities. There are free activities and some concerts which carry a cost. This year Mighty Uke Day will feature one of the world’s finest ukulele players, James Hill headlining with a special concert on Saturday, May 11. James is well known around the globe for his technical, songwriting, and educational skills. But most important James Hill is a thoroughly entertaining performer.

In case you didn’t know, the ukulele, a small 4-string guitar-like instrument, has been around since the 1880’s when it was said to have been created by the Portuguese.  The instrument gained popularity when it was brought to the Hawaiian Islands and embraced as a cultural icon.  Since then the ukulele has been adopted around the world, mostly because of its size, accessibility and ease of play.  In the 1920’s the ukulele was symbolic of The Jazz Age.  Most recently this mighty little instrument was re-popularized  by a giant of a man, Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, particularly through his enormously popular 2003 medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World."

Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, don’t miss Mighty Uke Day in Old Town, and be sure to stop by Cravings for a visit.

May 1st is Loyalty Day

This May day has been designated for showing your loyalty, especially for the United States.  Consider reaffirming your loyalty by truly pledging your allegiance.

Find a proudly flying flag, stand for a moment in reverence for all the liberties we have as citizens of the United States and recite the following, right hand over heart:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America,

and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

It is a good time to reflect on how important the word indivisible is in this pledge. In times of difficulties we are reminded that we are somehow stronger and better when we pull together – indivisible.  And, this land which was founded on the tenets of religious freedom does indeed provide liberty and justice for us all.

When you stop in to Cravings Gourmet Popcorn on May 1st, pick up or pull out your Cravings frequent shopper loyalty card, give us a salute and we will recite the pledge of allegiance with you, and then punch your card twice for joining us in this sign of loyalty to our country.

Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is located in Old Town Lansing, the hippest area of Lansing, Michigan.  Cravings Gourmet Popcorn can be purchased online and shipped to anywhere nationwide.
