Boom, Boom, Boom

Not too long ago the song Firework was being heard and endlessly sung by legions of teenage girls, many with less than perfect pitch. I have to confess that the only part of the lyrics that seemed to cut through for me was the soulful wailing of Katy Perry singing “…baby you’re a firework…(blah, blah, blah)…make em go oh, oh, oh…(blah, blah, blah)…boom, boom, boom.”

Try suspending judgment for just a moment and take a look at just one section of the lyrics of Firework.

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag

Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?

Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin

Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep?

Six feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing

Do you know that there's still a chance for you

'Cause there's a spark in you?

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine

Just own the night like the 4th of July

Cue the chorus.  As an anthem for teenage girls (and anyone struggling with self-esteem issues), this one has some merit.  Go ahead - take a look at the complete lyrics and see if you agree.  As you reflect on the upcoming 4th of July celebrations, remember that it is about celebrating the independence of a nation – one of our best holidays here in the USA.  But, when you hear the boom, boom, boom that signals the arrival of a particularly bright and beautiful firework, think of the person in your life that is ready to let their own light shine.

This 4th of July at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we are celebrating all the people that just need a little positive nudge to believe they are indeed a firework. This world, our nation, and your community will be better for it.  Happy Independence Day!

Cravings Part of Something Big

How cool is it to do business with the next great thing in online businesses and to know that this business hails from Michigan? Owner and developer of Conpoto, Matt Lepard, launched his business in 2012 from his home base in Holland, Michigan; the online virtual gift service that is rapidly growing into several states and cities, including Lansing.

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we are psyched to be among the first businesses in Lansing to sign-up for Conpoto the e-service that makes it possible for people to gift items like drinks, coffee, snacks (popcorn J) at cafes or businesses like ours to someone else via the internet.

Conpoto is easy to use to say ‘thank-you’ – ‘good job’ – ‘happy whatever’ or even ‘sorry’ in a novel way. Customers of Conpoto go to the website, select a state, city and a vendor like, say Cravings, to place an order, pay by credit card, and arrange to have notice of the virtual gift delivered to the gift receiver.

Check-out the line-up of virtual gifts and prices from Cravings Gourmet Popcorn available on Conpoto.

So, next time you have a reason to give a gift, make it the easy online way with Conpoto and Cravings. When you do, you will be investing in two great Michigan-grown companies.

An Instant in Time – Summer Solstice in Old Town

Here is a little solstice education, brought to you by Cravings Gourmet Popcorn:

The summer solstice occurs when the tilt of the earth’s semi-axis, in either the northern or the southern hemisphere, is most inclined toward the sun that it orbits. This happens twice each year, at which times the sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the North or South Pole.

Technically the summer solstice is calculated as an instant in time, solstice is derived from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). Generally described the summer solstice, (commonly known as the first day of summer) occurs on the day that has the longest period of daylight – except in the polar regions, where daylight is continuous, from a few days to six months around the summer solstice. For those of us in the northern hemisphere summer solstice is usually some time between June 20 and June 22.

Celebrations of the Solstice have their roots in ancient tribal rituals, many coming from the European countries. Those celebrations have made their way across the ocean and through time, having little to do with the original celebrations rooted in rituals of fertility.

One of the most notable contemporary Solstice celebrations happens each year in Seattle, Washington where the annual Solstice Parade has been co-opted by Naked Painted Cyclists since 1995.  A little tamer, and closer to home, Old Town Lansing, through the efforts of the Old Town Commercial Association, has been celebrating the dual festivals of the Moon and Sun since (year).  These two festivals create a good reason to sample beer, wine, some great music and the company of good friends.

At Cravings we love events like the Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun because each year new people find their way to Old Town and discover just how fun it is to be here.  We always earn some new regular customers during the festival season, and for that we are so grateful!  So, when you get here face north on Turner Street, look for the giant popcorn box and come on in. We love that instant in time when you change from a stranger to a friend and customer.

Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun Run On Volunteer Power

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we know that every festival or community event usually needs oodles of FREE labor in order to reach its goals to make the most profits possible. Running two festival events back to back requires even more vigilance in coordinating the volunteers.  We were thrilled to see that Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun are using the web-based volunteer coordination program called Volunteer Spot.

Volunteer Spot does a great job of communicating effectively and directly to legions of volunteers; the best part is that it takes the burden of follow-up and reminders off the shoulders of the volunteer coordinator.  Aside from the ease of signing up for volunteer duties online, volunteers receive an email at the end of the year with a recap of all of their volunteer activities coordinated through the program.  Volunteer Spot is a reasonably priced service which earns its keep by continuing to add value by offering ideas for new fund-raising opportunities.

Successful nonprofit organizations know that the difference between success and failure lies in the hands of the volunteer corps.  Don’t let confusion, lack of communication or volunteer burn-out undermine your efforts.

Volunteers or would-be volunteers don’t overlook the personal value of volunteering, getting outside of yourself and helping an organization like the Old Town Commercial Association make a success of the Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun plus a dozen other great events throughout the year.  Your payment will come in the form of new friends, loads of smiles, new experiences, and if you are lucky maybe a FREE T-Shirt or two. Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun both happen in the heart of Old Town Lansing and are scheduled for June 21st and June 22nd respectively, there is still time to sign-up to volunteer.

When you are here in Old Town be sure to stop in and see us at Cravings on Turner Street, just look for the giant popcorn box.

Cravings Honors Father’s Day

Here is a poem for Dad. It touched us, feel free to share it with the Dads in your family, we are sure anonymous will not mind.

What Makes a Dad ?

God took the strength of a mountain,

The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add,

He knew His masterpiece was complete,

And so,

He called it ... Dad

- Anonymous

Forget the tie, get Dad something he will really like for Father’s Day – a Cravings Gift Card or Tin filled with his favorite flavor(s).

Cravings Welcomes You to the Old Town Scrapfest

One of our favorite events of the summer season is the Old Town Scrapfest. This is an event that you will not find anywhere else and one you won’t want to miss.

The Old Town Scrapfest is in its fifth year and this scrappy little event is taking on a life of its own.  Local artist and perennial Scrapfest committee member, Barb Hranilovich, credits the idea to David Such of Such Video. (Take a look at the videos from past Scrapfest events shot by Such.)

“This is event is so ‘Old Town’ – take what you have and make it better,” said Hranilovich.  “And with the Friedland Industries scrap yard occupying a significant amount of Old Town real estate it is no surprise that this unique event which celebrates the resourcefulness of taking something that has been cast-off and turning it into something beautiful, was born here. “

The event begins with The Pick (which occurred on June first) where registered teams have just one hour to enter the Friedland scrap yard to pick and haul out 500 lbs. of scrap.  Friedland, the main sponsor of the event, assists the teams with the equipment to move their raw scrap.  From that point the teams have two weeks for The Creation when the teams feverishly work to complete their scrap art sculptures in secret locations all over the city.

This year a week has been added for The Preview, when completed scrap art piece entries will be chauffeured around town for the community to have a first look.  The Old Town Scrapfest ends with The Voting which happens in Old Town at the Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun.  “What I love about The Voting is that it is accessible for families, there are no velvet ropes keeping you from touching the art. This is where you will hear families talking about art in ways you won’t hear anywhere else,’ commented the artist.

This crazy, gritty creativity means each year Old Town is commissioning works of art (last year 18 of them) that end up in people’s yards or places of business.  The sculptures are sold and the proceeds go to the Old Town Commercial Association.  It may be too late this year, but there is a way you can get involved besides voting or buying.  There are team sponsorship opportunities and other ways that you can volunteer.  For Team Sponsor information contact Louise Gradwohl   louise@oldtownmainstreet.org

If sponsoring a team is not in your budget - you can still support the Old Town Scrapfest by purchasing a mini scrap souvenirs created by Barb Hranilovich from Friedland scrap.

Lady Bowlers Invade Lansing

Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is ready for the invasion … of lady bowlers. We've popped the best kernels into the tastiest popcorn, are ready with our best recipes for flavoring popcorn, and have plenty of our all-time favorite flavors like caramel with sea salt on hand and all packaged up to go.

The folks at the Convention and Visitors Bureau must be giddy with delight.  The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Midwest Women’s Bowling Tournament is a six week tournament that hosts competition bowling every weekend starting May 19 and ending June 29.  These lady bowlers come to compete for prizes but also bring revenue to area hotels, restaurants and shopping areas.  This is a big economic shot in the arm that happens once every six years. The next time we see the lady bowlers it will be 2019.

So, Lansing, let’s roll out our welcome mat for these visitors that will no doubt be looking for fun and interesting things to do when they are not bowling.  The tournament is being held at the Royal Scot Bowling alley, which means there is a great opportunity for Old Town businesses to host these visitors.

Don’t worry regular Cravings visitors, there is plenty of room in the store and if it gets busy we promise that the team will work extra hard to get you in and out in a hurry.

Chalk of the Town 2013

As odd as it seems Cravings Gourmet Popcorn was happy to see people sitting, crouching and even laying down on the streets and sidewalks of Old Town Saturday June 1st.

Chalk it up to creativity on display.  This event, Chalk of the Town, is rapidly becoming an Old Town favorite.  Artists creating art for art’s sake with little regard for the possibility that rain will wash away the product of their labor.  This year the weather gods shined for the artists decorating the sidewalks and there were some spectacular pieces of work.

If you do any surfing on the internet you may have seen the incredible chalk artists that are able to transform the two-dimensional street canvas into an awesome, eye-tricking and mind-bending three dimensional display.

Time probably doesn’t allow for the incredible 3-d variety of chalk art but our local street chalk artists did us proud. Check out our gallery (coming soon) of the “Best of Chalk of the Town 2013.

When you stop in to Cravings, let us know which one was your favorite chalk art display from Chalk of the Town 2013.
