Go Green This Year with a Real Michigan Christmas

There is a long-standing national Christmas tree debate about real trees vs. fake trees.  Now, there are strong arguments on both sides which we will not re-hash here.  But at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn our bias is for real, Michigan-grown, Christmas trees.  Why? Because it is good business for the State of Michigan and good business here is good for all of us.

Our state is ranked number three in the nation at the harvesting of Christmas trees and the industry is a great contributor to our agricultural and agri-tourism economy.  Representatives of the Michigan Christmas tree industry report there have been disturbing declines in real Christmas tree sales over the past few years.  We are not sure if this is a sign of a wavering economy or a trend towards convenience.  Keep this in mind, our Michigan Christmas tree farmers plant three million trees every year, providing a real renewable commodity.

Learn more about a new campaign called Real Michigan Christmas and join us in supporting our fellow local business owners by buying a real Michigan Christmas tree.

Once you get your tree home consider some other ways to go green this Christmas by visiting this site for some ideas on edible handmade ornaments suitable for kids and pets, or this one on making and decorating an eco-friendly, animal friendly tree outside. Popcorn is involved.

What’s your choice this year? Real or Fake?

Old Town’s Dickens Village a Holiday Event that Celebrates the Season

"It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good-humour."

- Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Inspired by the Victorian Era novella by Charles Dickens – A Christmas Carol, Lansing’s Old Town merchant association kicked off the holiday season Saturday, December 1st with the annual Dickens Village event.  Family fun activities were front and center with rides in a horse drawn carriage, ornament-making and a holiday scavenger hunt.  To enhance the flavor of the day Dickens characters and Carolers roamed the streets of Old Town to entertain all who attended this festive event.

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we look forward to this annual family friendly event every year.  So if you missed being haunted by the ghosts of Christmas past, you can still put a visit to Old Town on your family calendar of events because the Christmas spirit is alive In Old Town.  If you come, please be sure to stop in to the Cravings store to sample the latest and most popular flavors and consider gifts from Cravings to help you complete your holiday shopping list.  Holiday Tins, Cravings Gift Cards, and the popular Whirly Pop Popper and Seed are all great choices.

Five M’s for Healthier Holiday Feasting

Let’s get this straight – major holiday eating events can create a slippery slope of high fat, super rich, artery clogging foods that while they taste great would be much, much better for you in moderation.  Here’s how to eat healthy this holiday season, compliments of your friends here at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.

Change your Mindset. The holidays are about family and friends not food, drinks and snacks. What activities could you replace that would improve the quality of your people interactions and downplay your food interactions?

Modify recipes. There are so many great resources for transforming and slimming down your classic holiday recipes into new healthy favorites. Try Cooking Light magazine for transforming holiday recipes for Medicinenet.com for healthy eating ideas.

Manage portions.  Holiday Cooks should try preparing just enough for the number of guests, forego the cooking for lots of leftovers mentality. Try editing the menu – no one will complain if there are two or three side dishes missing from the table. When it comes to filling your own plate dial back the portion sizes and savor every bite. Seconds?  Fuhgedaboudit!

Make your holiday meal one of three. Consider your normal daily calorie intake and divide it among the three meals, adjust the calories downward for the non-holiday meals but DO NOT skip the meals or starve yourself for the big holiday event.

Move it! After a wonderful meal with family and friends, plan on getting some light exercise together; take a nice walk instead of a retreating to the sofa for a turkey-induced nap; or have some fun, play a game with the kids – it will be good for you and the kids.

So remember the five M’s: Mindset; Modify; Manage; Make; and Move, for a better, healthier holiday season.

Happy Holidays!

Bored? Try Some Classic Board Games

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we believe that nothing goes better with popcorn than family game night! And, nothing goes better with family game night than classic board games.  In honor of National Games and Puzzle Week we celebrate some of the greatest games of all times.

How many of us learned our first lessons on how to play by the rules by hopping our Gingerbreadman game piece back and forth on the colorful path to Rock Candy Mountain in Candyland?   Or, when we got a little older, enjoyed the twists and turns of Chutes and Ladders and the reversals of fortune that come regularly in the game of Sorry?

Who can forget the whodunit game of Clue and solving murder mysteries that involved characters like Colonel Mustard and Miss Scarlet?  Was it with the candlestick or the rope?  As we got a little more sophisticated, so did our games – marathon games of Life and Monopoly fine-tuned our understanding of economy, planning, strategy and negotiation.

For the more cerebral nothing satisfies like a challenging word game of Scrabble or a speed round of Chess?

Or, if you are in the mood for an evening full of giggles and laughs, pack up the board games, pull out the Twister spinner and spread out the colorful floor mat and let the contortions begin!

Don’t forget the Cravings Popcorn to top off family game night.

Thanksgiving Do’s and Don’ts – Four Interesting Points of View

Turkey is the Star of the Day

For the uninitiated here are some wise words about the main event – the turkey.  Take it from us…plan ahead if you are going to purchase a frozen turkey. It may take two or more days to safely thaw a turkey in your refrigerator. Be forewarned, there is a gooey, gross bag of turkey innards and neck that is usually hidden in a cavity of the turkey –this SHOULD NOT remain in the turkey while cooking. Finally, the thermometer that you buy to test the temperature of the turkey DOES NOT stay in the turkey while cooking, if you do, be prepared to throw away a turkey covered with glass shards and mercury!

Newlyweds Avoiding Family Conflict

If this is your first Thanksgiving as a newlywed couple the Huffington Post and blogger Xochitl Gonzales have some great advice to navigate the day successfully.

DO call your Momma, and your Momma-in-law for a recipe. Every family has "classic family dishes" for Thanksgiving (or any holiday). Don't be afraid to ask for help and information on how to make the favorite dish of each of your families.

DON'T turn this into a Top Chef episode. Try your very best to not "deconstruct" anything, reinterpret anything or re-invent anything. Just do a good job cooking the classics and you will be able to do the unthinkable: please everyone.

Cheeky Mom Weighs In

Michigan blogger Colleen Stout contributed this blog to a site called Mom Spark and provides a tongue-in-cheek approach to Thanksgiving Do’s and Don’ts, including the following advice:

DO sit at the kid’s table. They’re loud, they’re rowdy, and they don’t eat their sweet potatoes.

DON’T load up your plate with Cousin Ann’s “secret recipe” until you’ve tried it. If it’s bad you’ll spend all afternoon politely choking it down.

 Pets At Thanksgiving

Confess! Sometimes you feed your pet people food. If you can’t resist the urge to share your Thanksgiving bounty Paw Curious has some good ideas on what to share and what not to share.    Visit this blog to see a list of safe foods to share and foods to avoid.

DO plan on setting aside some food before it is embellished with high fat items like butter and cheese.

DON’T share turkey skin. Most pets on commercial diets just aren’t accustomed to sudden high levels of fat. Feeding your pet turkey skin can lead to the pancreas overreacting and the very painful, dangerous condition known as pancreatitis.

Whatever your plans are for Thanksgiving, we at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn want to wish you a safe, healthy and happy holiday.  We are so grateful to count you among our friends and supporters.

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn, family is important to us and the month of November, particularly November 17, is a great time to celebrate family.

Sometimes the definition of family goes beyond the traditional.  Did you know that in Michigan there are over 4,000 children in the foster care system? And on any given day there are approximately 500 of those children waiting to redefine family as they wait for the opportunity to be adopted by their new forever-family.  To learn more about adopting children from the foster care system visit Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange.  There you will find the tools to find a child that might be a match for your family.

Each year as the holiday season approaches in Lansing the courtroom of Judge Economy is transformed into a real party place as families celebrate the finalization of their adoption of children of all ages.  The about to be adopted children and in some cases their new siblings are decked out in their finest outfits for this memorable occasion.

We celebrate these new families by encouraging them to stop by our Old Town store and receive a special gift to help the family continue the celebration – just flash your paperwork inked by the judge.  Nothing says party like popcorn!

This will be the 28th year that the City of Lansing kicks off the holiday season with the annual winter/holiday celebration, Silver Bells in the City.  It is safe to say that this event just keeps getting better and better and bigger and bigger.  Much of the focus is on the fireworks display over the State Capitol building and the official lighting of Michigan’s holiday tree – but you should know the list of activities encompasses dozens of locations all over downtown.

This year Silver Bells in the City is scheduled for November 16th in downtown Lansing – most festivities begin at 5pm.  A little later in the evening, at 7:45 teen star Coco Jones will be performing Live in Concert on the Capitol steps.   The Coco Jones concert is sponsored by Radio Disney. You can learn more about Coco Jones by going to her website, www.therealcocojones.com

Other festivities include a Silver Bells Fun Run and a Saturday morning, day after Silver Bells Breakfast with Santa.  To learn more about all of the Silver Bells activities, visit the official website for a map and legend with details of special things you simply won’t want to miss.

With all the excitement, fireworks, and electric light parade for us at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn there is still one image that says it all for us…picture crowds of people all oohing and ahhhing at the dramatic fireworks display. Dotted among the crowds you will see little children in snowsuits perched on the strong shoulders of dad, grandpa, big brother or uncle.  Now that is a heartwarming sight to behold.  Silver Bells in the City is FREE to the public and gets our vote for most family-friendly event all year!  See you downtown.

Broad - Welcome to the Art Scene

It has been a long time coming and definitely worth the wait.  The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at MSU is scheduled to be dedicated Saturday November 10 at an outdoor public ceremony, you can register online to attend the dedication ceremony.  An open house will be held Sunday, November 11. Additional details about these and other events to be held that weekend are forthcoming and can be found at the Museum website.

The dramatic building, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, is a work of art itself with its extreme angles and polished chrome-like finishes that seem to have grown organically out of the ground.  Hadid’s work is famous for this distinctive urban architectural look.

Old Town Lansing was proud to have the Broad Art Museum present this summer displaying works of art from the museum collection in our neighborhood at the former home of the Chrome Cat (Isn’t that poetic?). And, we are equally proud of our own contributions to the local art scene.  The growth of Old Town as a destination is due, in large part, to the courageous gallery owners, art lovers and artists that have continued to enhance the quality of life here in our community.  Don’t forget to put the Old Town First Sunday Gallery Walk on your list of things to do.

While you are in Old Town soaking up the local art scene be sure to stop in at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.  There are always great flavors in store for you here and we would love to hear what you think about your art experience in Old Town and the Broad at MSU.

Oh, Nuts? No Nuts!

When you buy popcorn flavors at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn you can be confident that our products come from a nut-free zone.  Now, we like nuts (of all kinds) but with so many people having nut allergies it is simply easier and safer to avoid nuts all together.

At Cravings we guarantee that you will never miss the nuts and it will be a flavorful and worry-free snacking experience.  Although be advised, we must caution you, that Cravings Popcorn has been known to create a severe popcorn snacking addiction.

So, if you have a hankering for nuts, we’d like to suggest The Peanut Shop in downtown Lansing.  This is a legacy shop that has continued to serve the Lansing area with roasted nuts of all sorts since 1937. It started out as a Planter’s Peanut Store so you will still see lots of Planters memorabilia with the stick-legged peanut in a top hat and spats.

Avoid a Halloween Epic Fail Costume

If you have an invitation to a Halloween party or you are just thinking about creative costumes for Halloween, here is some great advice regardless of age.

1.       Avoid awkward construction. If you have to apologize every time you take a step in the costume, you are in for a miserable night. If you can’t see where you are going, used a whole role of duct tape or tin foil, and/or loads of cardboard, chances are your costume has crossed the line into “awkwardville.”

2.       Don’t do costumes that are grossly inappropriate. Here’s a clue - kids/babies dressed as terrorists, or infamous characters such as Hitler or Osama Bin Laden – a big NO.

3.       If you can’t pull off sexy any day of the week, don’t do sexy.  For most, sexy at Halloween means less costume, and in our opinion, less is less.

4.       Just say no to stereotype put-downs.  If you suit up in a stereotypical slam that offends any number of people, you will end the day feeling dirtier than you have ever felt before. FAIL – you just sucked the joy out of a perfectly wonderful holiday.

Looking for appropriate themes for your Halloween costume? Here are some idea starters for inspiration:

1.       Things you love. Try food or drink. Years ago six friends dressed up as a six pack of Heineken in green clothes and hats that were fashioned to duplicate the neck and cap of the bottle.

2.       Famous people you admire. Little kid dressed as Justin Beiber, ohhh so cute!  Dressing as senior citizen Justin Bieber, hilarious!

3.       Political topics over political figures. If you can find a way to create a smart lampoon of a topic, rather than a public figure, you are going to be on higher ground.  A couple could dress appropriately for the label 1% and 99% to poke at the Occupy Movement.

4.       Look to current icons that are in the news. What would you do with I Phone 5? Or, the Facebook IPO? We’re picturing hoards of kids in tattered hoodies, shower sandals and tube socks.

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we wish you a safe and fun Halloween. Share your costume pictures or confess your past epic Halloween costume fail.

The Changing Colors – Autumn Rite of Passage

Ever wonder about the science behind the changing colors of leaves?  Us too! We found this great website to explain it in simple terms.  Did you know that leaves, during their photosynthesis process (combining sunlight with water) make oxygen and glucose – or sugar?  Sweet!  Plants/trees use this sugar for growing.

As the days shorten and the weather turns cold at night it signals the trees to slow down the growing process because in the winter there is not enough sunlight to keep up the growing process.  Chlorophyll is a chemical by-product of photosynthesis that has been keeping the leaves green. When the process begins to shut-down for winter the green begins to disappear.  The bright yellows, reds and purples come from the sugar remaining in the leaves.

No matter how it happens, the turning of the autumn leaves is a great excuse to take a little fall foliage sight-seeing road trip. Across our great state of Michigan the progress of the fall colors display is tracked at the Pure Michigan website. You can choose your tour route and the best time to make the trip. If you are missing some quality time with your loved ones there is nothing like a little windshield time without the day-to- day distractions to provide a rich shared experience against a colorful display by Mother Nature.

Could we suggest a few treats for the road trip?  Happy travels from Cravings Gourmet Popcorn!

Ideas for Pumpkin Carving…WWMD? Planning to carve a pumpkin for Halloween? If you would like more than the triangles for eyes/nose and rectangles for the gap-toothed jack-o-lantern smile, it might just be time to ask yourself…WWMD.  Indeed, what would Martha Stewart do?  Fear not, the maven of all holiday gatherings has assembled nearly 50 great ideas, plus pumpkin carving patterns in downloadable templates, to sharpen your pumpkin carving.  Even if you are not a Martha fan, there are some great resources here.

Go ahead and design your own jack-o-lantern but be sure to use the latest is safe carving tools. The carving kits that are available at nearly every store that has a Halloween display can make your carving experience a lot easier and much safer.

Take a cue from Martha and draw out your design on paper so you can take advantage of the existing assets presented by your pumpkin and safely transfer your design by poking the cut lines through the paper right onto your pumpkin.

Pumpkin carving can be both fun and frustrating. If you have younger children that want to be part of the process, yet are not ready for the challenges and safety risks, be sure to create an age appropriate opportunity to involve your children.  Who else would relish the idea of scooping out the pumpkin guts? If you have a very complex carving in mind you might do well to tackle the job in phases or involve the children in the early stages and then keep the completed carving as a “surprise reveal” after they return from a task (like raking leaves) or an outing to purchase a costume.

Happy Halloween from Cravings Gourmet Popcorn, share the product of your carving with a picture. We’d love to see your handiwork.

October Sky

The weather is turning colder, the outdoor activity choices are fewer, and the television pickings are slim.  How about a great popcorn movie night instead?  Pick your favorite movie and pair it with some great popcorn and soda from Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.  One of our favorite inspirational movies is October Sky.

There is nothing like a great movie based on a true story for some quality entertainment.  Jake Gyllenhaal and Laura Dern star in this 1999 movie about Tennessee teenager, Homer Hickam, inspired by the launch of the Russian satellite Sputnik.  It is a movie about defying the odds, being willing to dream, and making those dreams come true.  Hickam is faced with the harsh reality that his family expects him to follow his father into the coal mines.  Viewing the Sputnik traveling across the October sky changes everything for Hickam, setting him on a trajectory as soaring as the Sputnik.

We also like the fact that the science teacher, Miss Riley, depicted in this movie by Laura Dern, is the kind of teacher that chooses to empower her students. When teachers in the classrooms of today are struggling with so many issues that make it harder to prioritize actual teaching, it is refreshing to see a story of a teacher focusing on the students, against the odds.  We say bravo to those teachers of today that are consistently empowering their students.

So, how about it?  Is tonight an inspiring movie and popcorn night?

Tasteful Michigan Wedding

Cravings welcomes guest blogger Natalie Burg (now Vial) with her story about choosing Cravings Gourmet Popcorn gift bags as the guest favors for her Made in Michigan wedding.  Brava Natalie! You pulled off a meaningful and memorable celebration. We were proud to be part of it.

According to the very scientific study conducted by myself, utilizing the vast resource of my own recent memory, 78 percent of wedding favors are pretty horrible. A trinket with someone else’s name on it? What am I going to do with this? A book of matches? This is supposed to make me feel favored?

For our wedding, my now-husband and I wanted our gifts to our guests to feel like actual gifts. We like our friends and family; why give them something horrid? We also wanted favors to surprising, fun and something people would genuinely use. Oh, and they had to be Michigan made in order to fit into the theme of our wedding. Not that we were setting the bar high or anything.

It didn't take us long to dream up our ideal favor. Early in our relationship, I had taken my husband on an Old Town excursion for his birthday. He’s a musician, so I couldn't think of anything he'd love more than spending an entire day at Elderly Instruments. He did love that, but we ended up spending even more of our day at Cravings, where we sampled everything we could get our hands on and walked away with more popcorn than we could carry.

Since what we loved so much about that experience was discovering one delightful flavor after another, we wanted to share exactly that with our guests. So we made a bold proposal to Chad: How do you feel about making us 26 small batches of different popcorn flavors so our each of our guest tables can have its own? Is that asking too much?

It probably was, but that didn't stop the Cravings team from making it happen anyway. So on the night of our wedding, when our guests entered the ballroom at The Crofoot in Downtown Pontiac, they were directed to a table map showing them where to sit based on their popcorn flavor. Not only was everyone delighted by the deliciousness of their favors, but the map of flavors encouraged guests to mingle, checking out other tables and swapping flavors.

Fun, surprising, useful, Michigan-made: check, check, check and check!

The reason having an all Michigan-made wedding was so important to my husband and I is that we're deeply proud of our home state and all the amazing talent we have here. We couldn't think of a better thing to send our guests home with as a reminder of that fact than a bag of Cravings Popcorn.

I shouldn't neglect the one downside, however. For weeks, we fantasized about all the leftover and forgotten favors that we would inherit at the end of the night to take along on our honeymoon. But alas, with 250 guests, not one left their popcorn behind. We were equal parts bummed and delighted. I guess now that we’re married, we’ll just have to go back to Cravings and reload.

Friday Night is Family Football Night

In the fall in small towns and neighborhoods across the country, attention still turns to the local high school football field.  These young men on the gridiron hold the hopes and dreams of a new generation of heroes and capture the imagination of an entire community.  Family and friends gather to watch and cheer and stomp as the young men in their prime test their skills and stamina on a game in four quarters.

But even more is going on there.  Parents volunteer to work in the concession stand or assist in the parking lot or the ticket booth, or they just serve as chaperone to a herd of younger kids flexing their social muscles as they crawl all over, around and under the stands. The school marching band performs their best to a steady drumbeat of excitement. The cheerleading and pep squads show-off their well-rehearsed routines and occasionally break into pure unrehearsed infectious enthusiasm for their home team.  Grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncles arrive in their sensibly warm clothes and team colors to take it all in with a show of support for their families.

In the two hours that make up this Friday night, the part we like the best is families having fun, no computers, no electronic games, just good family fun.  That’s the team we are rooting for … give me an F…A…M…I….L…Y!  Gooooo Family!

Who’s your team?

Tasty Tailgate Traditions

For some, tailgating itself is overshadowing the sporting event it celebrates. At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we’ve discovered that there is a competitive culinary one-upmanship that takes over tailgating to the absolute delight of those lucky enough to score an invitation. Try walking up and down the tailgating field for a new foodie sensation.  There are probably still a few tailgate menus serving up typical sub sandwiches and chips designed as a necessary counterpoint to large quantities of beer served by the gallon.

But you are just as likely to see creative tailgating like the one we stumbled upon at the Michigan State University season opening home game. This resourceful crew featured a huge seafood boil made with shrimp, mussels, oysters, crab, Andouille sausage, redskin potatoes and fresh corn on the cob. Other entrees at this little affair included catfish po'boys, crack spice chicken wings with fried okra and hush puppies. Their Cajun cheese dip was prepared with Andouille sausage cooked in bacon grease and amber ale, which was then tossed into a simmering pot of peppers, onions, and bacon braised chicken and, you guessed it more amber ale. This was all cooked down and added to a thinned creole pepper jack cheese.  This entire menu was topped off with a homebrewed craft beer.  Yum!

What are your tasty tailgate traditions?  Be a sport and tell us in the comments below. We really want to know.  Inspire us at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn and we may even go into the kitchen to design a new flavor based on your feedback!  In the meantime, make your new tailgate tradition begin with a stop at our store in Old Town to pick-up some of our best flavors for your big event.  If you think ahead to your next tailgate you can make a purchase online and depending on the amount you purchase, the shipping is FREE!

Where are you tailgating this weekend?  What’s on the menu?

The Real Smell of Fall

Smell that?  It is the smell of caramel apples, and to us at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn that is the quintessential smell of fall. It goes right along with the smell of leaves burning and a hint of cedar – no doubt from your sweater that you had packed away for the summer.

When caramel apple season arrives you can be sure that at least once or twice this season a package of three caramel apples will find its way into our grocery bag or be added to the order at the convenience store quick stop.

Our favorite caramel apple starts with a crisp, tangy apple like a McIntosh or a Granny Smith. Smother it in a smooth bright, not too thick caramel, roll in some salty peanut bits and speared with a sturdy wooden stick that holds the last lick of caramel and apple to savor as a final taste.  Be honest, you suck the caramel and apple juice out that little wooden spear like it is marrow from a bone.

Making your own caramel apples is really not too hard and can be just the idea for a fun evening activity that gets the whole family involved.  Here is a simple recipe  for making your own caramel. Yeah, you could melt the prepackaged caramel candies – but that would be… just wrong.   Don’t forget the wax paper, sticks, and of course, apples (nuts optional).

If you haven’t tasted it lately you should know that our caramel-flavored popcorn is a favorite at Cravings, stop in for your next treat.

Bluesfest in Lansing – Always Something New

We love the blues as a music genre – there are so many classics to call out that the (number of acts) could easily fill every set with classic favorites.  However, the organizers of this music event make sure that our blues music appreciation includes something new.  As part of their contract every Bluesfest act must agree to bring an original work to the stage, one that has not been performed on any other festival stage to-date.  How cool is that?

The Bluesfest 2012 is scheduled for September 21-22 on the streets of Old Town. This is just one of the Old Town events that bring thousands of new visitors to our doorstep every year.  We love seeing so many people out and about enjoying a good time in our neighborhood.

When you are in the area, make it a point to come in and visit for a minute.  Look for the giant popcorn box above our door – guarantee you can’t miss it!  If this is your first visit to Old Town, you are in for a treat.  This area is full of originals.

This year in honor of Bluesfest, Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is featuring our Big Three Way Mix and two Mexican Coke for $9.00, a savings of fifty cents.  Visit our comments section and tell us your favorite blues song, we might just use it to name our special Bluesfest combo.

Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is located in Old Town Lansing, the hippest area of Lansing, Michigan and is the favorite snack at all of the Old Town festivals. Cravings Gourmet Popcorn can be purchased online and shipped to anywhere nationwide.

Popcorn for Dessert on this Special Day

On September 19 Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is celebrating a very special day. Did you know that National Butterscotch Pudding Day is September 19th?  It’s a simple holiday to remember because it is always celebrated on September 19, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.  This year it is Wednesday – a perfect day to have a mid-week celebration.

National Butterscotch Pudding Day does not have an official proclamation, and the traditions associated with this day are understandably limited.  If you check online the best you can find is a call to make and eat your own butterscotch pudding on this special day.  You won’t find any decorations or special cards to commemorate this event - it appears that the stores and retail associations did not get the memo about this wonderful holiday.

We thought that the word scotch in the name might refer to either Scottish origins or for the hard liquor of the same name – wrong on both counts.  One explanation for the word is its relationship to the meaning "to cut or score" for the word "scotch", as butterscotch candy must be cut into pieces, or "scotched", before hardening. It is also possible that the "scotch" part of its name was derived from the word "scorch". (Thank you Wiki!)

With ingredients like butter, sugar, and salt – how can you go wrong?  That combination has worked well for us at Cravings. One of our most popular sweet popcorn flavors is – you guessed it – butterscotch.  Come celebrate National Butterscotch Pudding Day with us! Let’s try tossing some popcorn on your pudding.

Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is located in Old Town, the hippest area of Lansing, Michigan. We welcome visitors to our store and our website.  Enjoy our unique naturally seasoned flavors and vintage sodas, and when you can’t come in person know that we will ship your favorites to you anywhere nationwide.
