Another Great Local Asset – Woldumar Nature Center

Now that the weather has finally changed to spring it is time to get out and have some fun. At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we are proud to be part of a community that has so many great assets, Woldumar Nature Center is one of them.

May 10th and 11th are the dates for the Spring Celebration and 50th Anniversary Celebration of the association of the Woldumar Nature Center.

Friday evening is an adult craft beer and wine sampler and dinner fundraiser. Details included on the special events page of the Woldumar website.  Saturday, the festivities are FREE, except for some minor materials fees for some activities.  All day Saturday, beginning at 10am, you can experience the nature center coming alive from a long winter dormant state.

Spring Celebration activities include lots of educational events, a special eco pontoon boat tour of the Grand River, and a nature wildflower walk for a closer look at the returning foliage.  For the adventurous try one of Woldumar's GPS devices to explore Woldumar Nature Center on your own. Each way point will lead you to an interesting feature or cool location. Test out your skills, as some points may lead you to unexpected discoveries!  (Note: photo is a sample of the kinds of flower baskets for sale during the Spring Celebration at Woldumar)

This is a perfect family event to help you bust out of your winter rut.  While you are out and about, plan on a visit to Old Town – stop in and see us at Cravings.

How to Celebrate Cinco De Mayo

This holiday is an easy one to remember if you know how to count in Spanish.  What day is Cinco De Mayo? Literally translated it is the 5th Day of May. This is a holiday originally created to commemorate an unlikely win in a battle against the French on May 5, 1862. The Mexican Army, against all odds, defeated French forces in the Battle of Puebla. Since that time the celebration has come to be a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

Cinco De Mayo is usually celebrated with music like salsa, tejano, mariachi, and more; Mexican food favorites such as tamales, chili rellenos, and mole sauce; decorations will include color pennants and flags with the Mexican colors of green, white and red; and of course drinking and dancing.

Come on Lansing, let’s get our salsa on!

May 1st is Loyalty Day

This May day has been designated for showing your loyalty, especially for the United States.  Consider reaffirming your loyalty by truly pledging your allegiance.

Find a proudly flying flag, stand for a moment in reverence for all the liberties we have as citizens of the United States and recite the following, right hand over heart:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America,

and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

It is a good time to reflect on how important the word indivisible is in this pledge. In times of difficulties we are reminded that we are somehow stronger and better when we pull together – indivisible.  And, this land which was founded on the tenets of religious freedom does indeed provide liberty and justice for us all.

When you stop in to Cravings Gourmet Popcorn on May 1st, pick up or pull out your Cravings frequent shopper loyalty card, give us a salute and we will recite the pledge of allegiance with you, and then punch your card twice for joining us in this sign of loyalty to our country.

Gallery 1212 Features Illustrator Dennis Preston

One of the best ways to get out and enjoy a pleasant day is to participate in the regular Old Town First Sunday Gallery Walk.  What a great way to experience some of our area’s most creative talents ---all on display in the galleries of Old Town.  At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we love First Sunday Gallery Walk because new people find their way to the area, and of course, to our store.

Gallery 1212 in Old Town is pleased to announce that they have a permanent  gallery wall for one of the most prolific and creative illustrators – Dennis Preston. “We love Dennis’ work and it has proven to be very popular here,” said Gallery 1212 co-owner, Donna Randall.

When you look at a Dennis Preston illustration you will see a style that has echoes from the past.  In the late 60’s and 70’s Preston distinctive style was put to good use creating concert posters for bands and artists like:  The Byrds, Earth Wind and Fire, Bob Seger, and The Guess Who.   Nowadays if you haunt local Biggby’s Coffee Shops you may have seen Preston in the corner doodling on a napkin.  Preston says sometimes it is the people that come in that may inspire a doodle or idea, or maybe it is the news of the day.  These doodles have been a real boost to the barista tip count, Preston makes sure that every napkin is labeled as the property of the baristas and is only available for sale with a generous contribution to the tip jar.

Preston, a truly gifted illustrator, is also a musician and has several places online where his illustrative work and music can be seen or purchased.

While you are in Old Town be sure to stop in to Cravings and say hello!

Cravings Invites You to Experience Old Town

Friends, we bet that if you were to measure the fun per square foot, Old Town really packs a punch. There is so much to see and do in Old Town – you just have to experience it.  Here are two good, family friendly ideas for your next visit to our part of town.

Fascinating Fish

The Brenke Fish Ladder is an amazing feat of form and function.  It is one of six installations along 184 miles of the Grand River from Lake Michigan to South Lansing. It was built to help salmon and other fish with their natural migration to swim upstream against the strong current of the Grand River. The Brenke is a unique spiraling ladder.

Fish ladders enable fish to pass around barriers, like dams, by swimming and leaping up a series of relatively low steps (hence the term ladder) into the waters on the other side. The velocity of water falling over the steps has to be great enough to attract the fish to the ladder, but it cannot be so great that it washes fish back downstream or exhausts them to the point of inability to continue their journey upriver.

Watching the fish making their way up the ladder is a wonderful natural history experience for the whole family.  You will find the Brenke Fish Ladder in the heart of historic Old Town.

Just Two Blocks East

Here is another fascinating fish opportunity for your next visit to Old Town.  Just around the corner from Cravings Gourmet Popcorn and few blocks east of the Brenke Fish Ladder is Preuss Pets, an enormous pet store that is more amusement park than pet store.

The store includes an outdoor water feature as well as an indoor stream stocked with some very well-fed Koi.  While Preuss has more than fish for pets, they have a stock of fresh and saltwater fish that will keep you mesmerized for quite some time.  And, that’s alright with the folks at Preuss, every department has knowledgeable staff experts that are more than willing to allow you to look for as long as you want and to answer any questions you might have.

They also breed many of their fish right in the store.  They produce all of their: angelfish, guppies, platies, mollies, and swordtails.  They've also begun to breed a significant portion of their freshwater shrimp, corydoras catfish and rainbow fish.  They will be only too happy to tell you about the advantages of keeping these locally bred fish!

Preuss Pets understands that it is a destination store and that is why they encourage school field trips to their store, monthly educational events for kids, and even birthday parties.  We are proud to have such an awesome neighbor in Old Town!  While you are here, don’t forget to stop in to see us for a little popcorn love.

Zoobies Returns! Old Town Tavern to Re-Open

The rumors are true.  Zoobies will be open soon, under new ownership, but with the conviction to deliver the ambiance of a neighborhood tavern.  New owners Alan Hooper, Aaron Matthews, and Sam Short are no strangers to Old Town.  They all have skin in the game, and think Old Town is an awesome place for this venture.

The managing partner, Sam Short, says he is a lover of good booze in general. “As a sommelier I have always felt that it is important to serve the best product you possibly can, and we are going to make that so at Zoobies Old Town Tavern.”  See what the Zoobies website says about their product and presentation:

“We're a small neighborhood joint with an expansive beer, wine, and cocktail menu, some damn delicious bar snacks, and a fantastic retail carry-out area.(we have samples of a lot of our retail beer and wine, so try a sip before you buy a bottle.  In the winter you can cozy up to the fireplace and complain long and loud about the snow, and in the summer we have an outdoor area - because drinking outside in the summer in Michigan is why we all live here, right?)Come on in; you'll be happy that you did.”

You will be happy to hear that the distinctive name and Sputnik inspired sign will remain. The projected opening date is in mid-May. You can watch for updates on their website and Facebook fan page.

Craving’s Gourmet Popcorn welcomes Zoobies Old Town Tavern to the family of Old Town businesses that know that with hard work and a willingness to work together, good business can happen here!  And in the spirit of collaboration we are pleased to announce that Zoobies will be serving Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.  More on that later!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

"An Opener is not like any other game. There's that little extra excitement, a faster beating of the heart. … You know that when you win the first one, you can't lose 'em all." Early Wynn .

Opening Day Baseball helps us remember that anything is possible. The playing field is level and every team has a shot at winning for a brand new season. That is why at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we love the idea of Opening Day.

Locally, Opening Day for the Lansing Lugnuts is April 4th, playing against the Cleveland Indians starting at 6:30pm.  Major League Baseball is back with full force as the Detroit Tigers meet the New York Yankees on Friday April 5th at 1:05pm.

Opening day for baseball can be iffy weather-wise so plan ahead. We might have a bright sunny spring day, maybe it will rain a bit, or we might even have snow. No matter the temperature, Opening Day is still a special day. If you are a baseball lover, your happy space has almost arrived.

Even if you can’t get out to Opening Day in Detroit or Lansing, you can enjoy some great caramel popcorn from Craving’s Gourmet Popcorn as you watch the MLB season unfold on television.  We think that’s better than cracker jack any day of the week!

No Fooling…We’ve Got a Great New Flavor

April Fool’s Day is a great day for pranks and other foolishness.  You will get some extra leeway on this unofficial holiday of Fools as you try to pull a hoax on your friends and family - because on this day, everyone can take a joke!

The early history prior to the actual April Fools' Day includes the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, held on March 25 and there are even references to April Fools in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, circa 1390.  But seriously, there is something to the idea of taking the risk to be foolish.  Cher, of Sonny & Cher fame, suggests that “…until you are ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great.”

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we are taking the risk of looking foolish this month by introducing our latest new flavor, Chicken and Waffles!  Inspired by this southern soul food tradition we are bringing you this flavor for your consideration and tasty sensation.

Stop by and give it a try. We think it’s great!

Cravings Overflowing with Soda Pop

You go to fridge hankering for something to quench your thirst or maybe even delight your taste buds but all you find is the dregs of a weeks old low pulp orange juice, or that fancy new fortified water that you bought in a flurry of fitness good intentions that tastes like…well, nothing.

Brace yourself for an explosion of good taste. There are new soft drinks coming this spring to Cravings Gourmet Popcorn – nearly 60 new soda pop flavors. With these new additions our inventory of soda pop varieties will exceed 200! We know you love our great popcorn flavors but don’t forget our soda store stock of classic soda pop flavors to go with.

Cravings is proud to be headlining one of our most popular brands, Leninade. It is sassy lemonade that sports a bright red color and a sense of humor. Every bottle has a slogan that mocks Soviet life and propaganda such as Get Hammered & Sickled, A Taste Worth Standing in Line For, and Drink Comrade! Drink! – imagine a bright red bottle of Leninade on your desktop when your work environment gets a little oppressive for your taste.

New to our list of classic soda pop brands is Hippo Size, a brand from San Antonio, Texas founded in 1926 with a distinctive big bottle with a hippo embossed on the uniquely shaped “big bottle.” Hippo Size bottles from that era are definitely a collector’s item but the legacy of good taste continues. We will be stocking six flavors from Hippo Size. They are Big Black Cherry, Jumbo Root Beer, Colossal Cream, Prodigious Peach, Hippo Huckleberry and Burley Birch Beer.

The classic soda pop is only available in our Old Town store, so plan a visit soon to buy soda - stock-up on your favorites and try something new!

Lucky Star, Poetry and Popcorn

Lucky Star

I hear the music across the way

 my toe begins to tap

the beauty of my city

just a star upon a map.

Last September the Old Town Poetry Bench project was completed with the selection of winning poems and installation of new benches.  At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we thank our lucky stars that we have a bench in front of our store.  We are equally grateful to winning poet Denise Corey Henderson for her poem: Lucky Star. It is great to see visitors to our store and Old Town have a place to sit a spell and enjoy the comings and goings.

This Poetry Bench project is just another example of the Old Town Commercial Association’s commitment to improving the look of our business district and enhancing the experience for our visitors.  Coming to events sponsored by the OTCA means you are helping to support this community asset. Thank you for continuing to support our store by shopping regularly and bringing your friends and family to Old Town for a special treat.

Cravings Celebrates Girls

March 10 – 16 is National Girl Scout week.  Nationally the Girl Scouts of USA has a membership of over 3.2 million girls and adults, and there are over 59 million women in the US today that are Girl Scout alumnae – that’s a lot of girl power!   The organization started on March 12, 1912 with its first meeting for 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia. The Girl Scouts was created to help all girls develop physically, mentally and spiritually.  Those principles still hold true plus the organization has continued to inspire young girls by being willing to tackle important social issues and to foster a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we celebrate girls and the Girl Scouts.  We remind all local troop leaders that our Community Popcorn Project is open to your troop.  To learn more about how Cravings can help go to http://www.facebook.com/CravingsCommunityPopcornProject

Plus, this year Cravings owner, Chad Jordan, is participating in the local annual Girl Scout Cookie Bake-off event as a celebrity chef.  The event is Thursday April 18th and we would love it if you would come out and support us and the Girl Scouts. Our challenge to participate is to create a dessert using Girl Scout Cookies and of course…popcorn.  To learn more about attending the fundraising event go to the Girl Scout Heart of Michigan website.

Cravings Going Green

St. Patrick’s Day celebration ideas from Craving’s very Irish blogger, Katie Donovan.

Hmmm, imagine the crisp bite of crème de menthe combined with the sweet luscious taste of chocolate drizzled on top of our finest popcorn.  That’s what is in store for you beginning March 1st at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.  You don’t need to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day for this special treat.  But, if you come in wearing green you can get $1.00 OFF our crème de menthe chocolate drizzle popcorn.

What is your St. Patrick’s Day tradition?  Do you wear green ---hoping to get kissed or pinched?  Eating your share of corned beef and cabbage or drinking more than your share of green beer?  Or – if you must party, how about creating a mashed potato bar party?

That’s right a mashed potato party! I thought of this party several years ago and it was a real hit with my guests. It is easy to do …make one or two big batches of mashed potatoes.  I like serving one with super smooth mashed potatoes whipped with sour cream and another lumpier version made with redskin potatoes and garlic with some skins included.  Use your imagination to prepare lots of different toppings for your bar to dress up the potatoes.  Serve the potatoes in over-sized martini glasses (you can rent the glasses) for a little pizzazz. Enjoy the company of your guests while you feast on this ultimate comfort food.  Finish your party with some sweet treats from Cravings, like the crème de menthe chocolate drizzle popcorn!

Whichever way you decide to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, be sure to make it a safe one.  Looking forward to seeing you at Cravings!

Oh the Places You’ll Go

“You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So . . . get on your way!” This is the final line of the final book that Ted Geisel (pen name -Dr. Seuss) wrote.

March 2nd is the birthday of Dr. Seuss. He was not a real doctor, but he still made significant contributions to our lives.  Always a doodler, in college he was noticed by a fellow student. She suggested that he give up his idea of becoming a professor and become an artist. That student, Helen, would one day become his wife.  His artistic career started in advertising for Standard Oil Company. He later gained some notoriety for putting his artistic skills to work during the war effort by making films and animated shorts to train soldiers for World War II.

In the 60’s Geisel was inspired by a book based on a report called Why Johnny Can’t Read. The report’s basic premise was that elementary reading books were boring to children.  His first children’s book The Cat in the Hat was commissioned by two publishing companies to serve as a beginning reader. Ted Seuss Geisel spent 53 years writing and illustrating instructive children’s books that delighted and educated children and their parents.  Many of his best works carried important messages of social importance.

He died in 1991. Shortly before his death, when Ted was asked if there was anything left unsaid, he pondered the question and finally responded: “The best slogan I can think of to leave with the U.S.A. would be: ‘We can . . . and we’ve got to . . . do better than this.”

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn, we are inspired by the life and works of Dr. Seuss and encourage you to pick up a Dr. Seuss book for a little inspiration to apply to your life this Saturday, March 2nd.

Ladies First For March Madness

It is only fitting that the Michigan girl’s high school basketball tournament is on the calendar first (see below), since it was a girl’s high school sport before it was adopted by the boys.  Basketball was invented at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts because young men in their 20s and 30s were bored with plain old physical education.  The indoor game was played with balls of various sizes, peach baskets, and teams of varying numbers based on who was around.  The game proved to be so popular that it soon spread to YMCA s across the country with standardized rules.  Because there were few team sports for high school girls, many schools picked up basketball.  It wasn't until between 1905 and 1910 that basketball became a boy’s sport.

High School Girls Basketball Tournament Schedule

District Tournament -- Feb. 25, 27 & March 1

Regional Tournament -- March 5 & 7

MHSAA Quarterfinals - March 12

MHSAA Semifinals - March 14-15

MHSAA Finals -- March 16

High School Madness

The Michigan Boy’s High School Tournament begins March 4th and reaches its exciting conclusion March 23rd with the Finals at the Breslin Center on Michigan State University’s campus.  Information about all High School sports in Michigan, including the complete Boys schedule, can be found at the website for the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

Whether it is High School Girls Basketball or Boys Basketball, at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we appreciate the efforts that these student athletes (and their families) make to participate in sports as part of their high school careers.  Following your favorite local team does create a bit of madness, but in a good way, and every once a while there is a student athlete that sparks the imagination of a community and earns a place in the hearts of so many.  Next time you find yourself at your local high school slow down as you walk by the trophy cabinet and take a closer look at the names, chances are some of those names will be familiar to you – maybe because it is the name of a community or business leader, or just maybe it is a name of a stellar player that went on to greater heights.  Maybe you will see  a name like Earvin Johnson.

College Madness

For most, the real March Madness is associated with the NCAA, collegiate basketball.  NCAA Madness begins March 19th and ends April 8th.  If you want to understand what is happening for March Madness 2013, there is a great place online to get the schedule, read predictions, learn about ticket sales, and of course safely place bets.  This site is all about following your favorite collegiate team.  Might we suggest that instead of placing your hard-earned money on the line, how about a friendly wager where the winner gets a prize instead of cash …oh like maybe a Cravings Gift Card?

Good Popcorn, Good Works

Recently a customer walked into the Cravings Popcorn store in Old Town on a mission to buy some popcorn for his church youth group activity.  Cravings employee Adrienne, a Certified Tourism Ambassador by the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, is always curious about what brings customers in to the store. She knew that she could do better than just selling the customer a 1 gallon bag of popcorn.  “Are you familiar with our Cravings Community Popcorn Project,” she asked.  The customer was thrilled to find out that by just filling out a simple form on behalf of his non profit church group he would qualify to receive a Free Jumbo 5 gallon bag of Cravings Popcorn for the youth group event.

Since Adrienne took responsibility for the Cravings Community Popcorn Project in July of 2012, over 30 nonprofit associations have participated by receiving a Jumbo bag, gift cards for auction, or specially packaged gift boxes.  The nonprofits agree to acknowledge Cravings on social media, share and tag photos, or include a Cravings logo in an event brochure or program.  “One of my favorite nonprofit events that we supported this year was the Mid-Michigan Creative Alliance; they took a Jumbo bag for their Halloween event.  They filled our popcorn into rubber gloves along with candy corn for the finger tips to make some creatively creepy table favors,” said Adrienne.

If you are an events planner for your nonprofit and have an event coming up this year be sure to check out the Craving’s Community Popcorn Project.  You can reach Adrienne by emailing her at: donations@cravingspopcorn.com, or stop in to the Old Town Cravings store to get an application and chat with Adrienne about your event.

Cravings Gourmet Popcorn is located in Old Town Lansing, the hippest area of Lansing, Michigan.  Cravings Gourmet Popcorn can be purchased online and shipped to anywhere nationwide.
