Another School Year in the Bag

This is the time of year when most students are anxious to see the end of the school year.  It is harder and harder to concentrate on lessons when the great outdoors is promising long days of fun and new adventures.  The pace accelerates for the teachers and there is a frantic air as the list of things to accomplish before the end of the school year seems to get longer rather than shorter.

This week at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we celebrate National Teacher’s Day, and ways to say thank you. It is a good time to reflect on those teachers that gave you the powerful tools that have put you on your own path to success. Maybe this is a good week to acknowledge the teachers of your children (and maybe even your teachers) for their tireless efforts at providing not only education, but encouragement and empowerment.

I asked a friend of mine, a former teacher of second graders, to reflect on what those last days before the end of the school year were like for her.  “The end of the school year was always bittersweet. Although we teachers were also ready for the summer break, it was a bit sad that we would be saying goodbye the children that we had invested not only our time but our emotional energy for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week for 9 months,” said Suzy Winkel. “We have to say goodbye, and the best way is to remember what the students have accomplished and how they have grown. Truthfully, this is a big hand-off and I’m not going to lie, we worry about what is in store for these students over the summer and into the next school year. The only consolation is that we will have some time to rejuvenate and be ready for a new batch of students in September.”

Suzy went on to reminisce about the one day at the end of the school year that created a sense of finality for students and teachers. “We called it rag and bag day. Each child was to bring a bag to carry all their personal belongings home and a rag to clean their desk. We cleaned the desks with shaving cream, which works surprisingly well and makes for a lot of fun for the kids.”

Might we suggest that a great gift to acknowledge a teacher would be a tall bag of Craving’s finest popcorn?  Tie a ribbon around it and attach a card with your expressions of gratitude for a school year well done!
