This holiday is an easy one to remember if you know how to count in Spanish. What day is Cinco De Mayo? Literally translated it is the 5th Day of May. This is a holiday originally created to commemorate an unlikely win in a battle against the French on May 5, 1862. The Mexican Army, against all odds, defeated French forces in the Battle of Puebla. Since that time the celebration has come to be a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
Cinco De Mayo is usually celebrated with music like salsa, tejano, mariachi, and more; Mexican food favorites such as tamales, chili rellenos, and mole sauce; decorations will include color pennants and flags with the Mexican colors of green, white and red; and of course drinking and dancing.
