The Changing Colors – Autumn Rite of Passage

The Changing Colors – Autumn Rite of Passage

Ever wonder about the science behind the changing colors of leaves?  Us too! We found this great website to explain it in simple terms.  Did you know that leaves, during their photosynthesis process (combining sunlight with water) make oxygen and glucose – or sugar?  Sweet!  Plants/trees use this sugar for growing.

As the days shorten and the weather turns cold at night it signals the trees to slow down the growing process because in the winter there is not enough sunlight to keep up the growing process.  Chlorophyll is a chemical by-product of photosynthesis that has been keeping the leaves green. When the process begins to shut-down for winter the green begins to disappear.  The bright yellows, reds and purples come from the sugar remaining in the leaves.

No matter how it happens, the turning of the autumn leaves is a great excuse to take a little fall foliage sight-seeing road trip. Across our great state of Michigan the progress of the fall colors display is tracked at the Pure Michigan website. You can choose your tour route and the best time to make the trip. If you are missing some quality time with your loved ones there is nothing like a little windshield time without the day-to- day distractions to provide a rich shared experience against a colorful display by Mother Nature.

Could we suggest a few treats for the road trip?  Happy travels from Cravings Gourmet Popcorn!
