Among community developers the idea of creating walkable communities is the Holy Grail. Walkability is measured in many different ways (see this website on what makes a walkable community). We think Old Town is making great strides towards being more walkable, yet there are still many people that live and work close-by, people that would or should be the most likely to walk, yet in most cases they choose not to walk and complain about the lack of parking. This is puzzling to us at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.
If you think about big city life, say Chicago, parking your car turns into a long-term event. This is out of necessity because it doesn’t make sense to move your car from one of the precious few parking spaces. Residents and visitors willingly release their dependence on cars and walk the city. People are more than willing to walk 6, 8, 10 blocks and even farther to their destination(s) even in cold, windy weather.
To put this in perspective, the distance from the city center and State Capital building to Cravings in the heart of Old Town is 12 blocks, Lansing Community College is 10 blocks from Old Town, the Stadium District is 10 blocks from Old Town. Distances from Downtown to Old Town are even shorter if you use the River Trail. The distance from Arties Filling Station to Cravings is 2.5 blocks, from Cravings to Zoobies is 3.5 blocks, and Cravings to Golden Harvest is 2 blocks. Pruess Pets to Cravings – 2.5 blocks, Cravings to Elderly Instruments, 2.5 blocks.
Too far to walk? Really?
