Five M’s for Healthier Holiday Feasting

Let’s get this straight – major holiday eating events can create a slippery slope of high fat, super rich, artery clogging foods that while they taste great would be much, much better for you in moderation.  Here’s how to eat healthy this holiday season, compliments of your friends here at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.

Change your Mindset. The holidays are about family and friends not food, drinks and snacks. What activities could you replace that would improve the quality of your people interactions and downplay your food interactions?

Modify recipes. There are so many great resources for transforming and slimming down your classic holiday recipes into new healthy favorites. Try Cooking Light magazine for transforming holiday recipes for Medicinenet.com for healthy eating ideas.

Manage portions.  Holiday Cooks should try preparing just enough for the number of guests, forego the cooking for lots of leftovers mentality. Try editing the menu – no one will complain if there are two or three side dishes missing from the table. When it comes to filling your own plate dial back the portion sizes and savor every bite. Seconds?  Fuhgedaboudit!

Make your holiday meal one of three. Consider your normal daily calorie intake and divide it among the three meals, adjust the calories downward for the non-holiday meals but DO NOT skip the meals or starve yourself for the big holiday event.

Move it! After a wonderful meal with family and friends, plan on getting some light exercise together; take a nice walk instead of a retreating to the sofa for a turkey-induced nap; or have some fun, play a game with the kids – it will be good for you and the kids.

So remember the five M’s: Mindset; Modify; Manage; Make; and Move, for a better, healthier holiday season.

Happy Holidays!

Bored? Try Some Classic Board Games

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn we believe that nothing goes better with popcorn than family game night! And, nothing goes better with family game night than classic board games.  In honor of National Games and Puzzle Week we celebrate some of the greatest games of all times.

How many of us learned our first lessons on how to play by the rules by hopping our Gingerbreadman game piece back and forth on the colorful path to Rock Candy Mountain in Candyland?   Or, when we got a little older, enjoyed the twists and turns of Chutes and Ladders and the reversals of fortune that come regularly in the game of Sorry?

Who can forget the whodunit game of Clue and solving murder mysteries that involved characters like Colonel Mustard and Miss Scarlet?  Was it with the candlestick or the rope?  As we got a little more sophisticated, so did our games – marathon games of Life and Monopoly fine-tuned our understanding of economy, planning, strategy and negotiation.

For the more cerebral nothing satisfies like a challenging word game of Scrabble or a speed round of Chess?

Or, if you are in the mood for an evening full of giggles and laughs, pack up the board games, pull out the Twister spinner and spread out the colorful floor mat and let the contortions begin!

Don’t forget the Cravings Popcorn to top off family game night.

Thanksgiving Do’s and Don’ts – Four Interesting Points of View

Turkey is the Star of the Day

For the uninitiated here are some wise words about the main event – the turkey.  Take it from us…plan ahead if you are going to purchase a frozen turkey. It may take two or more days to safely thaw a turkey in your refrigerator. Be forewarned, there is a gooey, gross bag of turkey innards and neck that is usually hidden in a cavity of the turkey –this SHOULD NOT remain in the turkey while cooking. Finally, the thermometer that you buy to test the temperature of the turkey DOES NOT stay in the turkey while cooking, if you do, be prepared to throw away a turkey covered with glass shards and mercury!

Newlyweds Avoiding Family Conflict

If this is your first Thanksgiving as a newlywed couple the Huffington Post and blogger Xochitl Gonzales have some great advice to navigate the day successfully.

DO call your Momma, and your Momma-in-law for a recipe. Every family has "classic family dishes" for Thanksgiving (or any holiday). Don't be afraid to ask for help and information on how to make the favorite dish of each of your families.

DON'T turn this into a Top Chef episode. Try your very best to not "deconstruct" anything, reinterpret anything or re-invent anything. Just do a good job cooking the classics and you will be able to do the unthinkable: please everyone.

Cheeky Mom Weighs In

Michigan blogger Colleen Stout contributed this blog to a site called Mom Spark and provides a tongue-in-cheek approach to Thanksgiving Do’s and Don’ts, including the following advice:

DO sit at the kid’s table. They’re loud, they’re rowdy, and they don’t eat their sweet potatoes.

DON’T load up your plate with Cousin Ann’s “secret recipe” until you’ve tried it. If it’s bad you’ll spend all afternoon politely choking it down.

 Pets At Thanksgiving

Confess! Sometimes you feed your pet people food. If you can’t resist the urge to share your Thanksgiving bounty Paw Curious has some good ideas on what to share and what not to share.    Visit this blog to see a list of safe foods to share and foods to avoid.

DO plan on setting aside some food before it is embellished with high fat items like butter and cheese.

DON’T share turkey skin. Most pets on commercial diets just aren’t accustomed to sudden high levels of fat. Feeding your pet turkey skin can lead to the pancreas overreacting and the very painful, dangerous condition known as pancreatitis.

Whatever your plans are for Thanksgiving, we at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn want to wish you a safe, healthy and happy holiday.  We are so grateful to count you among our friends and supporters.

At Cravings Gourmet Popcorn, family is important to us and the month of November, particularly November 17, is a great time to celebrate family.

Sometimes the definition of family goes beyond the traditional.  Did you know that in Michigan there are over 4,000 children in the foster care system? And on any given day there are approximately 500 of those children waiting to redefine family as they wait for the opportunity to be adopted by their new forever-family.  To learn more about adopting children from the foster care system visit Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange.  There you will find the tools to find a child that might be a match for your family.

Each year as the holiday season approaches in Lansing the courtroom of Judge Economy is transformed into a real party place as families celebrate the finalization of their adoption of children of all ages.  The about to be adopted children and in some cases their new siblings are decked out in their finest outfits for this memorable occasion.

We celebrate these new families by encouraging them to stop by our Old Town store and receive a special gift to help the family continue the celebration – just flash your paperwork inked by the judge.  Nothing says party like popcorn!

This will be the 28th year that the City of Lansing kicks off the holiday season with the annual winter/holiday celebration, Silver Bells in the City.  It is safe to say that this event just keeps getting better and better and bigger and bigger.  Much of the focus is on the fireworks display over the State Capitol building and the official lighting of Michigan’s holiday tree – but you should know the list of activities encompasses dozens of locations all over downtown.

This year Silver Bells in the City is scheduled for November 16th in downtown Lansing – most festivities begin at 5pm.  A little later in the evening, at 7:45 teen star Coco Jones will be performing Live in Concert on the Capitol steps.   The Coco Jones concert is sponsored by Radio Disney. You can learn more about Coco Jones by going to her website, www.therealcocojones.com

Other festivities include a Silver Bells Fun Run and a Saturday morning, day after Silver Bells Breakfast with Santa.  To learn more about all of the Silver Bells activities, visit the official website for a map and legend with details of special things you simply won’t want to miss.

With all the excitement, fireworks, and electric light parade for us at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn there is still one image that says it all for us…picture crowds of people all oohing and ahhhing at the dramatic fireworks display. Dotted among the crowds you will see little children in snowsuits perched on the strong shoulders of dad, grandpa, big brother or uncle.  Now that is a heartwarming sight to behold.  Silver Bells in the City is FREE to the public and gets our vote for most family-friendly event all year!  See you downtown.

Broad - Welcome to the Art Scene

It has been a long time coming and definitely worth the wait.  The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at MSU is scheduled to be dedicated Saturday November 10 at an outdoor public ceremony, you can register online to attend the dedication ceremony.  An open house will be held Sunday, November 11. Additional details about these and other events to be held that weekend are forthcoming and can be found at the Museum website.

The dramatic building, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, is a work of art itself with its extreme angles and polished chrome-like finishes that seem to have grown organically out of the ground.  Hadid’s work is famous for this distinctive urban architectural look.

Old Town Lansing was proud to have the Broad Art Museum present this summer displaying works of art from the museum collection in our neighborhood at the former home of the Chrome Cat (Isn’t that poetic?). And, we are equally proud of our own contributions to the local art scene.  The growth of Old Town as a destination is due, in large part, to the courageous gallery owners, art lovers and artists that have continued to enhance the quality of life here in our community.  Don’t forget to put the Old Town First Sunday Gallery Walk on your list of things to do.

While you are in Old Town soaking up the local art scene be sure to stop in at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn.  There are always great flavors in store for you here and we would love to hear what you think about your art experience in Old Town and the Broad at MSU.

Oh, Nuts? No Nuts!

When you buy popcorn flavors at Cravings Gourmet Popcorn you can be confident that our products come from a nut-free zone.  Now, we like nuts (of all kinds) but with so many people having nut allergies it is simply easier and safer to avoid nuts all together.

At Cravings we guarantee that you will never miss the nuts and it will be a flavorful and worry-free snacking experience.  Although be advised, we must caution you, that Cravings Popcorn has been known to create a severe popcorn snacking addiction.

So, if you have a hankering for nuts, we’d like to suggest The Peanut Shop in downtown Lansing.  This is a legacy shop that has continued to serve the Lansing area with roasted nuts of all sorts since 1937. It started out as a Planter’s Peanut Store so you will still see lots of Planters memorabilia with the stick-legged peanut in a top hat and spats.

We wish you happy and healthy snacking!  If you would like to check out what’s new at Cravings be sure to visit our Facebook Fan Page.  “LIKE” us to become a regular fan which qualifies you to sample new popcorn flavors in development and cash in on special promotions reserved specifically for our Facebook Fans!
